i havent said this b4, but the past 6 months has forced me to review my current actions and wat i set out to do. is it ever possible to maintain a balance between the art & the craft? yet another question, sticking with something that works and has been known to sell or trying something else and hope it works?

its gettin harder to work with mrF, too sporadic and no emphasis on control. alvin's and peter's exhibition is currently on-going at sculpture square. hopefully alvin gets the best out of his deal wif bakerzinn and soon we can see his stuff there. pple from esplanade came down to talk with raymond, he maybe getting his solo show soon.

covered nafa fine art awards pro bono. the sponsor's said to be pulling out, there may not be a part 4.

it seems having our own skylight studio has its pros and cons. pros: we have privacy, quiet and a nice working environment. cons: we become reliant, and we lose touch with everything else happening around us.

work was busy today, but KS dropped by and Angie came early. Shiok, the studio has not been this lively in a long time. Martin is talking about subletting his studio out to cope wif rising rental fees or he's moving out in september. will miss this small cosy studio.

Raymond has been pushing me really hard for drawings. maybe he see's something that i don't. going about it from a new perspective, instead of my 'noir', now its colorful ahaha. drawings done by us locals and our china classmates are different. Tianming demonstrated to me the 'geometric' system that they pick up as default in china. me, i look for tones and contrast first.

left $100 at the atm, forgot to take. dumb mistake, but otherwise its a gd day!

interesting interesting, chatting wif rachel makes me laugh, n ponder.

everyone has their own personal struggle or struggles, its a fact, need no statistics to back it up. wats interesting is tat through the personal struggle, glimpses of the 'real' person can be seen. lets not get into the wats real or wats unreal kinda debate but understand tat once you know abt the 'struggle', u are in fact gazing into the very being of that person, and in that way, you are seeing the person as she/he realli is, no facade no camouflage.

the idea of the 'perfect' portrait is that of which defines the identity of the sitter. and the tricky part is the identity, who creates the identity? the sitter or by the people arnd her/him? and if the identity is defined by the people around, isnt it then alreadi their interpretation and their take instead of a true representation? something to think about.

the next time im doing a portraiture, i'll keep that in mind..

enjoid my time in fine arts, real pleasure.. explored alot, and in the process, learnt and experienced quite alot of new stuffs. of course, the company plays a HUGE part as well. im actualli a real lucky bozo, lotsa pple looking out for me, n helpin me out. cant realli ask for much more =) i drew, painted, constructed, shot, build, thought and build lotsa fancy castles in the air. all the late night drawin and painting sessions are not in vain, i have improved, nuthin amazing but still its progress lol. ordering pizzas to skool, arguement wif a particularly rude + dumb security guard, setting up our own art wall, late night C&C sessions included.
the gang; engineer/water-colorist, tuition teacher/psycho bitch, muaythai fighter/acrylic expert, hamster/DA maestro, pious boy/werkaholik, and an irritating MM bugger/expert painter.. and im the only non-painter in the group, which they never cease to remind me constantly with all their painterly jargon and language. simple things like colors turn technical ala yellow ochre, payne's gray, cobalt blue, hooker's green, ultramarine, raw umber, titanium white, mars black, napthol crimson and so on so forth.. u cant beat them, u join them.. alas & woe to me..
but then again, not everything is smooth-sailing, theres ups an downs. i found something then i lost it. formed a strong bond, n misunderstanding crept in. takes 2 hands to clap, i've done my part and now lets see how things turn out. hurt my back last sunday when i fell off ladder while werkin..
calender, assesements in 3 weeks. Art Street stall in 2 months, mini DA exhibition in 3 months.
need to find a more stable job for the holidaes, hopefully add another figure to a rapidly shrinkin bank account.
a bestest of fren told me 6 months ago, "once u made up your choice, dun question urself again." simply golden.. well belle, ur right. and im still waiting..

Been pretty busy recently with both school and work, so the lack of updates. February seems a pretty interesting month, with 2 film festivals. Film Noir, hurrah!

A friend just started his own events company, and we are still working on the set-up. Soon, it will take shape. School's interesting and the new class is pretty nice as well. Fine Arts, at least theres not too much constraints these time. As usual, watercolor paintings = pain things and yes im still struggling with it. Theres quite alot of creative freedom and its the one thing i relish the most right now. Im currently having a writer's block and the jug of creativity in my head is pretty much evaporated, dried, capish. Need my muse. And more books. And to wander.. Stumped..

local arts is alive. its time we listen to our own homegrown talents instead of juz dismissin them.

prior to the mid 70's in australia, local musik was hardly played on their radio stations. Perception of domestik musik was poor. around the period, several group of individuals and record labels banded together to push for radio airplay for local musik. the idea is if you dun get to hear it, no one is going to know it. fast-forward to end 2007, we have seen bands like INXS, Men at Work, Savage Garden etc etc, u tell me if it werked.

there are many great local bands out there, theres the legendary Padres, the melancholik Concave Scream, the sublimal Observatory, the pulp-ish Serenaide. bands like Typewriter, Caracal, Lilac Saints, Astreal, Stoned Revivals, the Marilyns, Great Spy Xperiment, Tiramisu and so much more.. Our local musik received airplay overseas too, in the UK, the late John Peel used to play the Padres, Force Vomit and Lilac Saints on his show.

not only the musik scene, the arts scene in s'pore needs to be seen and heard too. John Clang, Geoff Ang, Francis Ng, Ken Seet, Russel Wong, local fotography heroes tat put tiny s'pore into the world map. Directors like Eric Khoo, Royston Tan, Kelvin Tong, Tan Pin Pin, they did s'pore proud. haute couture has Ashley Isham, Maki Squarepatch, SeeUTomorrow. Artists, designers like Michael Lee, Brian Gothong Tan and so on so forth.. the fact is every discipline has its own heroes, true living breathing bred in s'pore heroes.

lets all do our part, regardless of how small and insignificant it may seem. support our local acts, artists and designers. click on this link

there are so many artists, designers, fotographers , film-makers, musicians. lets give them credit and the recognition they deserve. lets all contribute to the local arts scene and push the standard higher and make s'pore a true regional arts powerhouse.

Previsualization.

Liana's question "The importance conveyed by the emotions in an image? Or the importance that the photographer could convey the emotion? The question sounds almost similar but read carefully again. I almost missed the point.

And then again, theres the means of delivery. Equipment and techniques, more important? Technique and equipment should be essential to carrying out any previsualised image. Without it, the previsualised "emotion" of the image could not be effectively conveyed to the viewer. Will get back to you again..

The fundamentals are important, just like a painter should understand his medium or technique prior to work. Techniques and visualization should be 2nd nature.

Khairi's deep deep words "(the) rules, ins & outs of q camera, exposures, overcoming difficulties, genres, methodologies and other tangible stuffs can be taught', but it is 'those intangible ones... like feel and vision, and art of it", which is subjective. He explained that the initial question was not about equipment nor techniques, but rather as he puts it 'what the photographer previsualises will be (either) his care for the picture or care for himself.' For example the difference when a person says, "I want my picture to show human suffering" vs. "I want to show human suffering."

Hence, there is no right or wrong answers to this whole complex debate. We spend an entire night discussing only to realize we are not not making much sense. In the end, it boils down to personal choices. But it was a valid point to ponder on when we go about our lives with our cameras. We previsualise, conceive, and develop images..

todae's lesson was my class's last lesson together as a class. after tat, would be the assessments and we would all be headin to our respective disciplines alreadi. fine art to fine art, vc to vc, mm to mm and so on so forth. i like my class quite alot, very pleasant and frenly bunch of chummies. got a certain camaraderie quite hard to describe. all the best to all effeys for assessments and beyond!

jeremiah, a colleague described his photography experience as "solitary journey" and i like the term alot.. its not something easily comprehended, the process of conceptualization until= the moment the shutter is pressed. its all in the head, the mind. Henri Cartier Bresson's "the mind's eye"
so many different approaches to photography, each with its own merits. commercial stuff arent necessary "dead and lifeless" it has it's own vibes too. Steve McCurry (Magnum photographer, award-winning photojournalist) may not be able to shoot something simple like a glass bottle, making it aesthetically pleasing and making it desirable.. whilst V-keen (extremly meticulous and thorough commercial photographer) would be lost without his studio and lightings, gels, c-stands and gobo arms.
2 very different syles, with their own different ways of doing things.. doesn't matter which camp you belong too, just shoot more, and live the experience..

His beer drinkin, ciggy smokin, beer belly bulging, vulgarities spewin "frens??" initiaited a verbal assault b4 i can even explain that im not there to steal their goods or anithing. i have heard alot of !##%&*^)&@#$@^%(& language but these guys are gd, they bring it to a whole new level and even make it seem like an art-form. lolz, if they'll stop brandishing their beer bottles like holy weapons and maybe, perhaps, pause for a breath between their verbal assaults, i'll treat them all coca cola! no more, no more "tacky" issues. went through mental map of weird things i've done, and yes, they r still weird and even downright dumb, but they r fun! 7hr long cycle-thons, not too lawful climbin into weird places, wavin of hands up at 18th floor for 40 mins, going out 4am in the mornin while its raining to shoot, umbrellas fencing in the city, gettin chased by angry punters for shootin, wearin army PT attire to party, candle-lit picnic in a far away distant carpark, water polo in a stormy sea, midnite delivery of cakes and pastries, pickin a fight with an arrogant fishball uncle, gettin stone-drunk on a strange roof-top in m'sia, pretendin to be a tourist for a day, initiated a fishball flingin war, runnin 2.4km in flip-flops, wrestlin in a public swimmin pool, disturbin the poor neighbourhood 7-eleven ger, got knockd down by car in neighbourhood carpark, drinkin 8 bottles of beer juz to get "free" t-shirt in siam, crashed fren's brand new motorbike (accident), racin the coast guard on motor boat, dancin in the mrt train, lalala. kookiness!

We came darn close to biting the dust on our last escapade.. KTM railway track, 5 fellas wif their eyes glued to viewfinders on a one-way track bridge over a busy highway. Railway officials screamin at us to leave the bridge. And not a moment too soon, as the train sped by juz as we left the bridge.. realli wat can i say? experience of a lifetime! Recalled a humorous incident while bookin out todae chuckles ^ ^

My entire platoon and i were all cramped on a bus bound for Pasir Ris interchange when a hawkeyed fella spotted and shouted in glee.... at the backview of a attractive young lady. Alerted, 46 pair of eyes immediatedly swivelled with utmost precision and accuracy to focus on the very welcomed sight. Hoot calls were made and remarks are passed as everyone admired the beauty of the human anatomy. Everyone is enthusiastic and excited, that is, until the bus shot past the lady......

The entire bus went into silent mode, then erupted into boisterous booing and profanities for....

Bought the King of Foxes (finalli out in paperback) by Raymond Feist.. darn good read.. Eagerly waitin for the book 3 of the same series and the book 4 of George RR Martin's Song of Ice and Fire cycle.Movie galore! Caught 3 movies in 2 days, Himalaya Singh , I do I do & Constantine.I do I do's quite funny lol, can watch. Constantine is quite nice as well, science fiction + suspense drama + gothic influences + religious references = entertaining since it has such an interestin storyline.

Serenaide's fabulous! "Your my furry animal fury.."

Great gig. Enjoied the musik together wif Nur, Farhinz, Cheehong, Josh and Fit. And together, we soaked in the magik of the moment.. Chloe was doing the MCing and spotted Kahlil helpin and hangin out at the merchandise corner..

Huge turnup for the gig, so much so tat i can't get my usual seat at the left frontmost row, wif its scenic view of the evening sky and city skyline in the background. In fact, i didn't even managed to get a seat. Squeezed into the throng and sat on the floor as if nuthin's wrong lol.. As i've said before, its a great gig. The Marilyn's and Mocca's sets were real impressive. I especialli like the way Pheyroz pronounced fury, in Furry Animal Fury.

Last words in my mind before i slip into the embrace of unconsiousness.. "from the corner of her eye, over me over you. She said run over you, over me.."

Feb 19th is another date to mark down as its Music For Good's Tsunami Fund Raising Gig. Cheehong informed me tat The Observatory will be performing on Feb 17th as well, tickets available at Roxy Records..

Chinese New Year coming rite up! Its the festive season all over again, time for bak kwa, abah-longs and ang baos.. Goodie!

Went to JB wif CheeWee, Maowee, GP and 2 other guys on sundae. It's also CheeWee's bdae. Nt feelin well on sundae bt i still went along for fear of CW's incessant nagging.. Everyone was buyin jeans, t-shirts, bags and stuff while ii juz bought 2 books, Eyes of God and Devil's Armor by John Marco. Went for a Rm300 ++ seafood feast at Tamah Terblau which includes my fav. black hokkien mee and some more rare dishes like crayfish in cereal.. Shiok! Lol can never order like tat here in S'pore..

Been pretty busy the past 2 days, helpin out at my cousin's stall at Alexandria techopark sellin children and infant clothings. Setting up stall and arranging the goods is a real nightmare. Did some pretty drastic measures for the sake of sales. We slashed the prices down and declared "Lelong!" to all passerbys lol.. Its over todae but she will be settin up stall again this sundae at Pasir Panjang. Do patronise if any of ye are interested in infant wear..

Juz a couple of months ago, there was a drought for good gigs and suddenly this month everything is happening at one shot. Astreal, Observatory, Serenaide, Tiramisu, Pat Chng and so on, overwhelming lol. If this is wat the new year offers, den 2005 would be a great year for local musik!

Went to Jiak Kim street last nite wif Joanne, Nur, Fit and some of their chums to catch Observatory in action and to watch Rotston Tan's new movie Cut. Cut is quite nice, wif its Bollywood yet local musical and its message to the film censors board.

Why issit pple wif mixed heritage or nt from S'pore are viewed as exotik? Ok im chinese, from S'pore and im oh so exotik and oriental! Lol..

Got up at 9am packed some old clothes and went off wif my sister to donate and volunteer our services to help the tsunami victims.. Wrong information landed us at their storage area at Butterfly Lane No.44. Arrived at St Andrew's cathedral and they had enuff volunteers alreadi. We went to YMCA where my sis signed up wif their communications and logistics hub for coordinating efforts in Sri Lanka. I would have liked to head over to Sri Lanka myself to help out bt the age limit is 21 grrz..

Caught Tiramisu's performance todae. Realli great. This is their first performance since 8 months ago and the last time i caught them in action was at LaSalle, nearly a year back. They played a couple of older tracks and some newer ones like Paper Crane and Rule the World. Lotsa antics and Rizman doing his jumping and prancing arnd lol. No bodysuit todae though. They even got a old man to dance along to their lyrics, "Whose tat dancing man?". Last time i watched them, they hired a man to run arnd wif a open parachute strapped to his back! Lol all part and parcel of their visual and performance arts idea.

Went to Chinatown to meet LB and Sally for dinner. LB brought me to his crush's family's pig organs soup stall. He was busy ogling at his crush while i was busy eating. Its quite gd although i still prefer the one at Newton Market and the stall in Geylang East. Sally later forced LB and me to go to Veins where we had some Tiger while she was happily singing away.. Why issit the default draft beer everywhere is Tiger? Groanz..

Juz send my parents off. They are off on another of their short getaways to M'sia. Slogging away at werk, a break is a very welcomed thing for them. It relieves their stress and it keeps them away from their usual monotonus and tedious lifestyles even if its juz for a couple of days..

Received my green enlistment letter todae. Place, Pulau Tekong BMTC school 2. Time, 12th March 11.30am. I have arnd another 2 more months to get in shape. Gotta tie down all loose ends before i go in. Nt much chance of seeing The Antidotes in their debut performance it seems. Better start on the fotography website wif Nur as well. 2 months more, issit gonna be a long 2 months or issit juz gonna fly by? I wished i have the answer myself.. Frens are tellin me to enjoi my next 2 months as much as i could. I can think of nuthin better, den juz spending quality time wif her..

I dun feel negative abt enlistment at all. Everyone has to serve the nation sooner or later, juz a matter of time. Serve 2 years, fulfill the obligations to the nation and get on with life. Tink its time to start doing some planning.. Haha National Service. "Defending the nation". Had a fun day todae. Went to OF Bakers Inn and got some cheesecakes as a surprise for her. She got me a slice of their speciality choco cake. Shiok! Quite tasty and quite sweet, and i won't mind another slice! She's stunning todae. Had a short chat wif her den left her to her werk.

Seemed as though i've juz fallen asleep when my mum called me to accompany her for grocery shopping. Grumbled and grumbled but finalli reluctantly got up n went to meet her. She has to buy all the foodstuffs and marinate the food for the bbq on fridae. Had satay for dinner.

Met Nur and Fit for sheesha (apple flavoured). Got The Cure's Staring at the Sea from Nur as christmas present. The 2 of them mades lotsa cheesy and weird jokes... especialli Fit...bonkers lol..

Merry Yuletide to all! Had dinner at hme wif my family, godparents and my sis's bf for Christmas eve. Met up wif Skinny in the nite and accompanied to Sentosa so he can deliver his present to XD. Robin joined us and we went for billiards and Hock Kee joined us arnd 5am.

Went to Ktv wif Raymon, Robin & Lanjour on Christmas day. Congregation! We den met up wif CY, Matthew & Skinny and we all dropped by Skinny's place for another TCSS + card games session. Raymond, as usual was tellin all the dumbest jokes and saying the lamest things lol..

Hoho realli enjoied myself todae, mondae. Went for Kungfu Hustle wif her, can't tink of any more desirable company heez.. She look so sweet and i've got to force myself nt to stare.. And thx for the card, its realli nice =)

The reports from Sri Lanka is realli disturbin. 1/5 of the nation's population are either dead or missing and the north, south and eastern part are hit realli bad. I used to have a Sri Lankan maid and her name's Mercy. I called Mercy's sister whom is still in S'pore and told me tat Mercy is in the Middle East and tat their family is safe. Glad tidings in a time of tragedy..

Stayed home and set up the christmas tree in the afternoon. Realized tat im realli realli bad to wrapping stuff. Spend an hour plus just on wrapping gifts, and i tink they looked better unwrapped.. Well aniwae, its the tot tat counts, nt the wrapping rite? (optimistic!)

Went to Bugis again in the evening. Its the 3rd time alreadi in as many days. Bought a new handfone! Lol first new fone since i lost my 8850 nearly 3 years ago. The fones nowadays can be quite intimidating, they can be so complicated, wif camera, MMS, Wap, Bluetooth and so on so forth.. I have absolutely no idea how it werks and wats this function and wats tat, succour me!

Went to Cold Storage wif a grocery list in hand. Added 2 bottles of Corona to the list lol. Had nt had a Corona for a long time. Bumped into YongSheng on my way home on the bus. Made some smart-alec comments he did.

Wednesdae is about rushing.. Went to the library to return 4 overdued books. Forgot to buy wrapping paper previously and rushed to Bras Brasah to get it and den went for a hair cut.. All these in 3 hrs.. hectic last minutes.. the chinese have a saying "Ling Shi Bao Fuo Ziao" directly translated, it means "last minute hug buddha's leg for succour" Lol..

Went for dinner wif family at Hotel Miramar's japanese restaurant.. The sashimi there's damn gd.. Accompanied my mum and sister to Bugis for their last minute shopping. I bumped into Serene and Jas and den i bumped into Hock Kee and his fren.

My dad's bdae's todae. Happi 53rd bdae dad! Used to have lotsa misunderstandin wif him when i was younger. He's the silent but sturdy type. Hardwerkin, responsible and taken for granted most of the time, especialli at werk. Never heard him grumble or complain abt it even once though.. He's the macho macho kind, cool demeanor and seldom see any emotions from him although when he does flares up, its "Uhuh!".. I used to make him angry all the time in the past, the 2 of us tryin to outstubborn the other into giving in lol.. Did some much-needed room cleaning and realized my room actualli looks better this way! Lol "stunning revelation" Parents juz got back from their trip to Shanghai & mom's ill. She bought some "ter-kah" wrapped in airtight plastik back sayin its very famous over there. Lol talk abt air pork..
